Root Bridge

Jembatan Akar (The Roots Bridge) locates in kampong Pulut-Pulut, North Bayang sub district. It is about 65 KM from Padang city and 24 KM from Painan, West Sumatera.

the capital of Pesisir Selatan region district. Jembatan Akar is a unique tourism object, it was formed by the braided roots of Beringin/ Ficus Benyamina tree, it is really look like a bridge, and under the bridge is flow a Bayang river.According to the local story, the bridge is estimated to be 100 years old who designed by a religious leader named Pakih Sokan. This bridge connects the two villages separated by rivers that is Lubuak village and Palut-palut village, development of bridges was conducted in 1890 and used by the local people in 1916. so it’s need 26 years to knit the roots to be a roots bridge. This special uniquely if the tree is getting older (the older bridge age) that make the bridge more stronger, this is different from the most ordinary bridge, if the bridge was getting old that make the bridge increasingly fragile.
